My intent is to create positive life changes for my clients. I am the creator of the DVD, “Essential Elements of T’ai-chi” and co-creator of the DVD “You and Me”, along with film-maker Prue Adams and Aboriginal Elder, Aunty Carol Cooper.
Throughout my career I have supported people of all ages and abilities using a range of techniques including Tai chi/Qigong, The Journey Method and the Black Dog Institute REACH Program. I work with people individually or in groups and have helped hundreds of people.
Particular examples include Mark, who, after four weeks into a program with me, decided to stop drinking alcohol. He has since maintained his sobriety and enjoys improved relationships with his wife and family. Another example is Heather, an older woman who is overjoyed with the physical improvements in her balance, flexibility and endurance, which significantly enhance her quality of life. Following one treatment session she claimed “I feel like I could dance down the street!”
MY STORY
At age 19, I was seriously ill and spend many months bed-ridden, weak and anaemic. For five years, I struggled with recurring episodes and compromised health, until a friend recommended that I try acupuncture. After six weeks of acupuncture treatment I felt like I was fully alive for the first time in many years. I studied Chinese Medicine and incorporated regular tai-chi practice into my life, and lived a disciplined life for many years, fearful of relapse. My self-imposed limits meant that my relationships with most people were restrained. This included my family, with whom I maintained a civil, but distant relationship.
In 2003 my mother’s life-long friend and neighbour committed suicide. This neighbour was someone who looked out for my elderly, widowed mother and checked in with her daily. They enjoyed occasional holidays together, along with other members of a close network of friends. My mother was in shock with the news and I felt an urgent need to do something to help improve our relationship. I was also struggling with my own emotions, including a sense of profound guilt that I was unaware of the neighbour’s situation and unable to offer any help. In February 2004, I attended the Journey Intensive and in subsequent years, completed the full Journey Practitioner Program as well as post graduate study in Counselling and Psychotherapy. Over this period, my loving relationship with my mother was restored. I grew to appreciate more and more her kindness, her gentleness and her deep and indestructible love for family and friends. Most importantly, alongside my sisters, I was able to actively care for her in the last six years of her life – such precious years.
